The government has launched a state-operated taxi service using a fleet of 150 electric vehicles.

The service was inaugurated by President Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held on Thursday at Hulhumalé Central Park.

The vehicles were brought to the Maldives last month and are operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.

The fleet includes 60 Deepal S05 vehicles, 70 Lumin vehicles and 20 Deepal S07 vehicles.

According to MTCC, the Deepal S05 and Deepal S07 models accommodate four passengers and include storage space in both the front and rear of the vehicle. The Lumin models are designed for use in narrow streets and include space for small luggage.

Speaking at the ceremony, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudi said the service is intended to address transport needs in the Greater Malé area.

He said the service will operate on a 24-hour basis.

A web-based application has been developed for bookings, and a hotline, 1615, has been introduced for inquiries and reservations.
