The government's taxi line service was launched in Villimalé on Thursday, expanding operations beyond Malé and Hulhumalé.

The service, operated using a fleet of 150 electric vehicles, was introduced in Malé and Hulhumalé in April. The Villimalé launch was marked with a ceremony held near the island's ferry terminal.

Speaking at the event, Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed said the expansion of the Malé Taxi service to Villimalé fulfils a pledge made by President Mohamed Muizzu.

He added that the government would consider expanding the service further based on public demand.

Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, Ahmed Saudi, said two types of vehicles would be used for operations in Villimalé.

According to Saudi, both larger and smaller vehicles have been introduced to accommodate the island's road network.

He noted that some roads in Villimalé cannot be accessed by the larger buses currently used for public transport services.

“While we cannot reduce the size of public buses, today we have introduced a smaller alternative,” Saudi said.

He added that the service aligns with Villimalé's transport requirements, as fuel-powered vehicles are restricted on the island.

The taxi service will operate 24 hours a day, according to MTCC.

Passengers can book rides through the service's mobile application or by calling the hotline number 1655.
