MVR 1.68 million lost to scams in 1 month

A total of MVR 1.68 million was lost to financial scams in the Maldives last month, according to data released by the Maldives Police Service.

Police recorded 198 scam cases during the period. Of the total amount defrauded, MVR 690,000 has been recovered in connection with 37 cases.

The data shows that most cases were linked to e-commerce activity. Police reported 94 cases of e-commerce fraud and advised the public to verify sellers when conducting transactions on online platforms, including Facebook Marketplace and iBay.

Cases involving identity theft and social engineering accounted for 49 reports. These incidents involved individuals impersonating others to obtain personal information. Police advised the public not to share personal data or One-Time Passwords with third parties.

A further 31 cases were related to currency exchange fraud. Police advised against conducting currency exchanges through informal channels, including Telegram and Viber groups.

The Maldives Police Service stated that investigations into the reported cases are ongoing.
