Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on citizens to exercise their right to vote independently in Saturday’s elections.

Voting is taking place for Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections, and a referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held at the same time.

Gayoom made the remarks after casting his ballot at Aminiya School.

Addressing the media, he said voters should make their choices without influence.

“The message I wish to convey to the public is that the Maldives is a democratic nation. Every citizen possesses the right to act according to their will, within the legal framework. This is a free nation; therefore, I encourage everyone to vote freely,” he said.
