Solih urges policy changes following election results
In a post on social media, Solih said the results reflect public opinion on the current direction of the administration.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday called on the government to revise its policies following the outcome of the day’s elections.
In a post on social media, Solih said the results reflect public opinion on the current direction of the administration.
Provisional results from the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections show that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates retained mayoral seats in all cities.
Data from the referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held at the same time indicates that 72 per cent of voters opposed the proposal, while 28 per cent supported it.
Solih congratulated elected mayors, council presidents and members, and called for changes in government policy.
“The people have voiced their disapproval of the government’s current policies. Today, the citizens have sent a message that the administration’s course must be corrected. The government should heed the public’s voice and align its policies with the people’s expectations,” he said.
He also thanked MDP supporters and voters who backed the party’s candidates.
