Provisional results from Saturday’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections indicate that the Jumhooree Party (JP) has lost its council majority in ADh. Maamigili.

Maamigili is the home island of JP leader Gasim Ibrahim, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

According to results released so far, the JP secured four seats across the council and the WDC combined.

The party won the Council Presidency and one additional council seat. Of the remaining three council seats, the People’s National Congress (PNC) secured two, while the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured one.

In the WDC, the JP secured two seats. The PNC won the remaining three seats, including the position of WDC President.

The JP candidate secured the Council Presidency by a narrow margin over the PNC candidate.

The results follow a campaign rally in which Gasim Ibrahim called on voters to support the PNC in councils across the Maldives, with the exception of Maamigili.

At the rally, he said the current administration led by Mohamed Muizzu would remain in office for the next three years and stated that electing PNC councillors would support the delivery of services.

The results remain provisional pending completion of the count.
