Jumhoory Party (JP) leader and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim on Sunday urged to call in the military to restore order inside the parliament.
He made the remarks after chaos broke inside the parliament chambers after the main opposition MDP and the Democrats decided not to approve some members of incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet.
Both parties agree on refusing to approve three cabinet members:
-
Attorney General Ahmed Usham
-
Islamic Minister Dr Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed
-
Housing Minister Dr Ali Haider
Both parties rejected four ministers, but the two parties differed on the fourth. MDP decided to reject Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed while the Democrats have Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer on its list.
Amid the mayhem inside the chambers, Some of the ruling PPM-PNC leadership and supporters gathered outside the parliament to protest against the decision of the two parties.
Speaking to reporters after stepping out of the parliament, Gasim said:
-
Order must be restored even if the army has to be called in
-
Since the head of state is the President, the army must do as the President says
“When they destroy the things here and do whatever they please, the army should be here to take care of it without allowing anyone to destroy anything here,” he said.
"Also, the highest authority, the commanding chief of the state, is the President. The order of the President must also be obeyed”.
Gasim said he along with his party was ready to help the government.
Gasim said he was a leader of the coalition that ran the previous MDP government. However, he left the coalition and contested the last presidential election separately on a JP ticket.
