Maamigili MP and Jumhoory Party leader Gasim Ibrahim has called for an end to the opposition's attempts to impeach President Mohammd Muizzu, without any conditions.
Gasim in an X post on Wednesday, said that the President was elected by a large majority of the people under the rules of democracy and has been in office for only two months.
As long as the President does not violate the Constitution and does not violate any of the conditions of the office of President, the motion to remove the President with the intention of political revenge is like circumventing the people's vote, Gasim said.
The President is being removed from office because the opposition wants power, he accused.
“Such an act is unacceptable, especially in a parliament that is coming to an end,” he said in his post.
Gasim said:
-
The President's no confidence must be for justifiable reasons
-
Because they have majority in parliament, doing such things at whim and in spite are completely against the constitutional rules and democratic principles of the country
-
Such actions will bring sorrow and difficulty to the country
"Therefore, I offer my advice to stop the attempt to oust the President, unconditionally. So far, President Dr Muizzu has been ruling for the people and the country and to bring progress to the nation," he said.
He said that he believes the parliament should allow the president full opportunity to govern lawfully.
Parliament late last month approved an amendment to its procedural rules to allow the President or Vice President to be impeached by only the vote sof the opposition (MDP and its current ally Democrats), who have a large majority in the ongoing 19th Parliament.
With the amendment passed, 54 votes will be needed in this parliament to oust the President or Vice-President from office. The MDP and Democrats have 56 members between them.
