Seasonal flu accounted for the majority of reported cases.
More than 370,000 cases of respiratory diseases were reported last year, including 183 cases of COVID-19, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
The figures were released by the Health Ministry at a press conference held at the President’s Office Thursday.
According to the data, 370,592 people received treatment for respiratory diseases during the year. Seasonal flu accounted for the majority of reported cases. The breakdown is as follows:
-
369,232 cases of seasonal flu
-
1,178 cases of influenza
-
183 cases of COVID-19
The data indicate a high number of reported respiratory diseases.
The Ministry also released figures on other diseases reported during the year. Eye disease recorded the highest number of cases among these. The data show:
-
52,148 cases of eye disease
-
21,986 cases of diarrhoea and vomiting
-
188 cases of pneumonia
In addition, 2,611 cases of dengue and five cases of chickenpox were reported.
The data also note that more than 100 cases were recorded in relation to the outbreak that led to a global health emergency declaration in January 2020. The disease was later classified as a pandemic. The World Health Organisation lifted this status in May 2023.
The disease resulted in deaths worldwide, including in Maldives.
