The opposition PPM/PNC coalition, which has been quiet after holding large public meetings and events to raise anti-government slogans, has decided to hold a massive rally in Male.
The opposition coalition is holding a massive rally in Male three months after a rally held in August to hand over the presidential ticket to former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for the upcoming presidential elections.
The upcoming event is named 'Felaalaifi', which literally means 'squeezed' in the past tense but has various sociolinguistic contexts in the local language.
After the August rally, Yameen travelled to the northern and southern atolls for campaigning, but the opposition did not hold any major activities in the capital city. It is believed that the campaign was halted due to the ongoing trial of Yameen on the V. Aarah case.
Opposition coalition spokesperson Heena Waleed said on Wednesday that it was a rally to protest against the government's "looting" of people by raising taxes, raising prices of goods and services. The event will be held at the Alimas Carnival on 23 December.
At the end of the hearings held at the Criminal Court, Chief Judge Ahmed Shakeel said that Yameen will be sentenced before the New Year.
