Cities minister Adam Shareef resigns
With his departure, six cabinet ministers have resigned.
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar resigned from his post on Tuesday.
His resignation follows a request by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for several cabinet ministers to step down after the recent elections. With his departure, six cabinet ministers have resigned.
Adam Shareef was appointed to the cabinet on November 17, 2023, the first day of the current administration. He also serves as Vice President of the People’s National Congress (PNC).
During the presidential election period, Adam Shareef contested for the PNC ticket after former President Abdulla Yameen was ruled ineligible to contest. He contested against Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who was later selected as the party’s candidate.
Other ministers who have resigned include Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, and Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya.
In addition to the cabinet changes, several heads of state-owned enterprises have been dismissed or have resigned over the past week following the conclusion of the elections.
