President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef (M. Kothanmaage) as Chief Government Spokesperson at the President’s Office, at the rank of Minister.

Shareef has held several roles in public service, including positions in the cabinet and diplomatic service. He previously served as Chief Government Spokesman from 2005 to 2007 and as Presidential Spokesperson from 2007 to 2008.

He was also involved in the establishment of the Strategic Communications Unit at the President’s Office.

Prior to this appointment, Shareef served as Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates.

His departure from the diplomatic post followed the circulation of a recorded phone conversation involving his mother, Member of Parliament for Maafannu Central Asma Rasheed, which included remarks about President Muizzu.
