Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation following an incident on a northern island involving an eight-year-old girl.
A video of the incident was circulated on social media on Thursday. The footage shows the child with her hands tied behind her back and secured to a tree.
Police said they received a report in the afternoon concerning the case. According to police, the child was subjected to actions involving physical and psychological harm and treatment affecting her dignity.
“In connection with this case, the police, in collaboration with relevant authorities, are working to ensure the child’s safety and are conducting necessary investigative procedures,” the police said in a statement.
Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the incident or individuals involved.
