Fifth suspect arrested in MVR 4 million theft case
Police said that MVR 50,000 has been recovered so far.
Police have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the theft of MVR 4 million from an apartment in Malé.
The Maldives Police Service said the latest arrest was made on Wednesday. The suspect has been identified as 47-year-old Jazeel Mohamed from Nolhivaranfaru in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. He was presented before the court and remanded in custody for five days.
The theft took place at an apartment in Nalahiya Residence on Majeedhee Magu. Police said that MVR 50,000 has been recovered so far.
Authorities stated that the investigation is nearing completion and that arrangements are being made to submit the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Among those previously arrested is 36-year-old Ismail Asif from R. Maduvvari, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison three years ago in a case involving a knife attack on a sea cucumber fishing vessel.
The other suspects in custody are Mohamed Noor Ahmed, 40, from Lh. Naifaru; Mohamed Afrah, 40, from S. Meedhoo; and Ahmed Faris, 39, from M. Asia, Malé.
Police said further proceedings will follow upon completion of the investigation.
