Meekail pledges neutral role in MDP chairperson race
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also announced his candidacy for the position. Nasheed has endorsed Fayyaz Ismail in the party’s presidential primary.
Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has stated that he will serve as an independent and fair Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) if elected.
The position became vacant following the resignation of the former chairperson. Meekail had earlier expressed interest in contesting for the role.
He launched his campaign on Tuesday at a press conference held at M. Finifaru under the slogan “Ithubaaru” (Trust). The event was attended by Members of Parliament, members of the party’s National Council, and party supporters.
Addressing the gathering, Meekail said the party would be managed with fairness and inclusivity under his leadership.
“Under my chairmanship, this party will be managed with justice, equality, and room for diverse opinions. I will ensure this remains a party where people of different perspectives and ideologies have their space,” he said.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also announced his candidacy for the position. Nasheed has endorsed Fayyaz Ismail in the party’s presidential primary.
Responding to questions regarding his position in the primary, Meekail said he is not aligned with any individual candidate.
“The assurance I want to give to MDP members is that, as Chairperson, I am prepared to conduct a primary that is fair and equal for all individuals interested in contesting the upcoming presidential election,” he said.
He added that his focus would be on representing the party’s membership.
“I am not aligned with any specific individual. I stand with the general members of the MDP,” he said.
Meekail stated that the next Chairperson’s main responsibility would be to secure victory in the 2028 presidential election. He said past electoral outcomes were achieved through collective efforts within the party.
He also confirmed that he has the support of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Commenting on Nasheed’s candidacy, Meekail said contesting for the position is a right within the party.
“I welcome his decision. However, I believe I deserve the vote because I have been serving this party continuously since the age of 16,” he said.
Meekail noted that he remained with the party during internal divisions and continued to work with its members.
He said he would continue to support the party regardless of the outcome of the election.
