The People’s National Congress has submitted a resolution to the People’s Majlis calling for action against protests in Malé, stating that the activities are unlawful.

The motion was introduced during Tuesday’s sitting by Abdul Sattar Mohamed.

While the demonstrations have been organised by opposition groups including the Maldivian Democratic Party and the People’s National Front, the resolution does not refer to any party by name.

Presenting the motion, Abdul Sattar said certain political activities were affecting public order and causing disruption to residents in the capital.

“As citizens face these conditions, I submit this resolution calling on the relevant authorities to stop these activities and take legal action,” he said.

He added that the purpose of the motion was to seek the position of members of parliament on the issue.

The MP referred to provisions in the Constitution, stating that rights are linked to responsibilities. He cited Article 27 on freedom of expression, Article 30 on participation in political parties, and Article 33 on protection of reputation.

The submission follows a warning issued by the Elections Commission of Maldives to the PNF regarding its street activities. The commission said the activities were in breach of regulations and indicated that further steps could be taken if they continued.
