PNF lawyer Asif summoned over alleged defamation of president

Adam Asif, a legal counsel associated with the People's National Front (PNF) led by former President Abdulla Yameen, has been summoned by police for questioning in connection with allegations of defaming President Mohamed Muizzu.
The case relates to a documentary released on March 28 by Adhadhu, which featured allegations concerning the President’s personal conduct made by a woman said to be a former employee of the President’s Office.
In connection with the documentary, criminal defamation proceedings have already begun against Adhadhu Chief Executive Officer Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and editor Hassan Mohamed.
Following a request by the Prosecutor General's Office, the Criminal Court also issued an order prohibiting public discussion or reporting related to the case.
Earlier this week, two Adhadhu journalists were sentenced to prison for reporting on the matter and questioning the President about the case despite the court order.
According to the police summons issued to Adam Asif, he has been instructed to appear at the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building at 10:00am on Thursday.
The notice states that he is being investigated over remarks allegedly made against President Muizzu during a public gathering held at the junction of Chandhanee Magu and Majeedhee Magu on the night of April 20.
In a related development, Aishath Eesha Ashraf was also summoned by police in connection with the documentary.
Her lawyers previously stated that police did not provide her an opportunity to present information in her defence during questioning.
