A protest was held in Malé on Wednesday night calling for the release of two journalists from Adhadhu who were recently sentenced to prison.
The demonstration began on Majeedhee Magu and included the participation of former President Mohamed Nasheed, Malé Mayor Adam Azim, and senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Protesters marched toward the Artificial Beach area before returning west along Majeedhee Magu while carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for the journalists’ release.
Family members of the detained journalists also joined the demonstration during the march.
At one stage, protesters moved from Majeedhee Magu toward Alikilegefaanu Magu in the direction of Muliaage, the official presidential residence.
Police officers established a blockade at the location and prevented the protesters from proceeding further.
During the confrontation, officers were seen pushing back journalists covering the protest.
A protester was also seen being taken into custody during a live television broadcast. At the same time, police officers were observed obstructing the camera’s view.
The two Adhadhu journalists, Levan Ali Nasir and Mohamed Shahuzan, were sentenced by the Criminal Court on Tuesday.
The case relates to a documentary released by the outlet containing allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu.
The journalists were charged over reporting related to the case and for questioning the President about the allegations despite a court order prohibiting public discussion of the matter.
