Meekail is contesting the post alongside former President Mohamed Nasheed in the party’s internal election.
Solih confirmed his support for Meekail during a press conference attended by Nasheed and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Responding to a question from Dhauru, Solih said Meekail had announced his candidacy three months before Nasheed entered the race and that he had pledged support to him at that time.
“Nasheed is now contesting, but my support remains as it was initially,” Solih said while gesturing towards Nasheed during the press conference.
The MDP Parliamentary Group has also announced support for Meekail’s candidacy.
The endorsement was announced at a separate press conference held at the party headquarters, Haruge, by Parliamentary Group Leader and Ibrahim Nazil and other MDP members of Parliament.
