No parliamentary sittings will be held this week, extending the period without sittings to a second consecutive week.

At the last sitting, held on 25 May, the chair announced that parliament would reconvene on 8 June following a one-week break. As a result, no sittings were held during the final week of May.

However, the People's Majlis has now decided not to hold sittings this week either.

In a message issued to the media on Sunday, the Parliament Secretariat said the next sitting is scheduled for Monday next week.

The reason for the decision has not been announced. Efforts to obtain comment from parliamentary officials were unsuccessful.

Under the parliamentary standing orders, the legislative calendar is divided into three sessions each year. The second session of 2026 began on 25 May.

The first session of the year had originally been scheduled to conclude on 14 May, followed by a two-week recess. Instead, the session was extended until the end of May.

The extension was made to allow parliament to proceed with a motion seeking the removal of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from the post of Deputy Speaker.

During the extended period, only one sitting was held. That sitting, convened on 31 May, had been scheduled to consider the motion against Nazim. The session ended shortly after Nazim resigned from the post before the vote could take place.

According to parliamentary regulations, the second session is scheduled to continue until 15 August. Members will then go on a recess of about six weeks before the third and final session of the year begins in October and runs through November.
