President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government plans to prohibit children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms, with legal amendments expected to be introduced to implement the policy.

The President made the announcement during his weekly press conference at the President’s Office on Monday.

According to President Muizzu, the government intends to use measures adopted in Australia as a reference point when developing the policy.

He said consultations would be held with relevant authorities and stakeholders, while public views would also be considered before finalising the proposal.

“I intend to take the necessary steps to restrict children under 16 from using specific social media applications. I believe the measures taken by Australia serve as a good benchmark in this regard,” the President said.

He added that the government would explore whether the policy should be implemented through legislative amendments, agreements with social media companies, or a combination of both approaches.

“Therefore, in light of the measures taken by Australia, I intend to find a way to introduce Australia’s standards in the Maldives—whether it requires amending the law or engaging with the companies that operate these social media applications,” he said.

The President stated that the government aims to implement the restrictions within the next year. He said the measures would be enforced as soon as the required preparations are completed.

President Muizzu noted that exposure to harmful content through social media has become a global concern. He highlighted issues such as cyberbullying and online grooming as risks facing children and young people.

He said protecting children from such risks was a responsibility of the state and that the proposed restrictions were intended to address those concerns.

Further details on the proposed legislation and implementation framework have not yet been announced. The government is expected to conduct consultations before submitting any amendments to the People’s Majlis.
