The AA. Thoddoo Island Council has decided to close sports and recreational facilities during designated prayer times.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, a day after President Mohamed Muizzu said the government was working on measures to suspend sports activities at government-owned sports facilities during prayer times.
In a public notice, the council stated that a schedule had been finalised to regulate the operation of sports venues on the island.
Under the new arrangement:
-
Sports facilities will close for 30 minutes during each prayer time.
-
All sports venues will remain closed daily from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., covering the period between Maghrib and Isha prayers.
-
On Fridays, facilities will close from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The council stated that sports and recreational activities will not be permitted at the venues during the designated closure periods.
According to the notice, responsibility for implementing and monitoring the directive has been assigned to Youth Associate Azzam Ahmed and Senior Sports Councillor Mohamed Mazin.
The council's decision follows comments by President Muizzu during a press conference on Monday regarding plans to pause sports activities during prayer times at government-operated sports facilities.
The President said discussions were underway to establish arrangements that would allow individuals using sports facilities to perform prayers without leaving the premises.
According to the President, the proposals under consideration include:
-
Providing designated prayer spaces within sports facilities.
-
Requiring sports activities to stop for a specified period beginning from the Adhan.
-
Implementing the measures at government-owned sports venues in the coming days.
The government has stated that similar arrangements will also be incorporated into future sports facilities developed by the state.
