The Kaashidhoo Island Council has warned that legal action will be taken against individuals who use chemical pesticides on farms located within residential areas or near private homes.

In a public announcement, the council said complaints had once again been received regarding the use of chemical pesticides in areas close to households, despite previous warnings and restrictions on the practice.

The council stated that the use of chemical pesticides near residential areas poses risks to public health, particularly for children and individuals with existing medical conditions.

According to the council, employers of migrant workers will be held responsible if workers under their supervision are found applying chemical pesticides without following required safety measures or without the necessary protective equipment.

The council also announced that monitoring activities will be carried out in residential areas and nearby agricultural plots in the coming days.

It said individuals found violating the regulations would face action in accordance with applicable rules and procedures.

Kaashidhoo is one of the country's main agricultural islands, supplying fruits and vegetables to markets in Malé on a regular basis.

The council urged farmers and landowners to ensure that agricultural activities are conducted in a manner that does not affect neighbouring households or public health.
