Secretary-Generals (SGs) serving in Atoll Councils have been dismissed following the dissolution of the councils under amendments to the Decentralisation Act.

Under the latest changes to the law, responsibility for atoll administration is transferred to the Local Government Authority (LGA) upon the expiry of the most recent term of the Atoll Councils.

The amendments also provide for the establishment of LGA offices in every atoll. However, individuals serving as Secretary-General of the Atoll Councils were informed that their positions had been terminated when the councils ceased to operate.

Speaking to Dhauru on Thursday, Civil Service Commission Counsel General Ibrahim Rasheed said the SG positions were created specifically to manage the administrative functions of individual Atoll Councils.

He said the positions ceased to exist once the councils were dissolved.

According to Rasheed, the dismissals were carried out under redundancy provisions, and those affected received redundancy allowances.

"Other administrative staff were transferred to the LGA to arrange for LGA services to be provided in the atolls. However, SGs are individuals appointed directly to that specific Atoll Council for a designated term," Rasheed said.

The changes form part of the implementation of amendments to the Decentralisation Act, which place the administration of atolls under the authority of the LGA following the end of the most recent Atoll Council term.
