Nasheed votes in MDP leadership race, cites party activity across Maldives
Nasheed voted at the polling station established at Galolhu Madharusa. Voting in the election began at 2:30 pm and will continue until 8:30 pm.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed cast his vote on Friday in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) election to choose the party's next chairperson.
Nasheed voted at the polling station established at Galolhu Madharusa. Voting in the election began at 2:30 pm and will continue until 8:30 pm.
Speaking to the media after voting, Nasheed said the election process was proceeding smoothly and called on party members to participate in the vote.
He noted that weather conditions had not prevented members from turning out and said voter participation remained important throughout the day.
Nasheed, who contested the election under the slogan "Bodu Badhalu" (The Big Change), said the MDP had become active across the country during the campaign period.
According to Nasheed, party activities and support for the MDP could be seen across the islands.
"In all islands, our yellow colour, our songs, our flags and our advocacy are moving forward," he said.
Nasheed also argued that public confidence in the government had declined.
"Right now, Dr. Muizzu's government—and first of all Dr. Muizzu himself—has significantly lost popularity," he said.
He added that the MDP would continue its role in holding the government accountable and pursuing political action where necessary.
The MDP chairperson election is being contested by Nasheed, Ibrahim Mohamed (Wade) and Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
