India has donated 20,000 doses of measles vaccine to support efforts to control the spread of the disease in the Maldives.

The donation was formally handed over during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health on Thursday afternoon.

Health Minister Geela Ali accepted the vaccines on behalf of the Maldivian government, while the donation was presented by the Ambassador of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian.

Speaking at the ceremony, Geela said India had also provided laboratory equipment and medical supplies to support the country's healthcare services.

The minister thanked the Indian government for its assistance and noted that India has continued to support the Maldives during public health emergencies.

The donation comes as health authorities continue monitoring measles cases reported in the country.

Measles cases, a disease previously declared eradicated in the Maldives, were first identified in the Greater Malé Area early last month.

According to the Health Protection Agency, four additional cases were detected in the Greater Malé Area last week, bringing the total number of reported cases this year to 15.

Health authorities have urged the public to follow vaccination guidance and seek medical attention if symptoms associated with measles develop.
