Maldives secures Indian grant to equip youth centres on 42 islands

The Maldives has secured grant assistance from India to provide equipment for youth, fitness and recreation centres across 42 islands.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the project was signed on Sunday under India's High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP) programme, which is financed through grant assistance.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement was signed at the ministry in Malé.
Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam signed on behalf of the Government of the Maldives, Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian signed on behalf of the Government of India, and Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the implementing ministry.
Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam said equipping the centres would support the health and wellbeing of island communities.
"This project will pave the way for fostering healthy, active lifestyles and broaden access to quality physical wellness. It also marks a step forward in women's empowerment, promoting equality, and enhancing social inclusivity," she said, according to the ministry.
The Foreign Ministry said Iruthisham and Rafiu thanked the Government of India for its continued support to the Maldives through grant-funded development projects.
