The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied reports claiming that decisions have been made to establish a foreign consulate in Addu City and a Maldivian consulate in Bangalore, India.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry said information circulating on some media platforms and social media regarding the proposed consulates was inaccurate.

According to the ministry, the government has not made any decision concerning the establishment of a foreign country's consulate in any island other than Malé.

“This is a decision that can only be reached through broad consultations involving all relevant stakeholders,” the ministry said.

The ministry also stressed the importance of ensuring that information shared through news outlets and social media platforms is accurate and responsible.

It said the dissemination of verified information plays an important role in maintaining public awareness and social stability.

The statement follows reports suggesting that plans were underway to establish a Maldivian consulate in Bangalore and an Indian consulate in Addu City.

The Maldives and India have previously discussed expanding their diplomatic presence through the establishment of additional consular offices.

India's main diplomatic mission in the Maldives is its High Commission located in Hulhumalé.

The Maldives currently maintains a High Commission in New Delhi and a Consulate General in Thiruvananthapuram, India.

The Foreign Ministry's statement clarified that no decision has been taken regarding the establishment of the consulates referred to in recent reports.
