Former Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has been appointed as the Maldives' Ambassador to Qatar, while former Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has been appointed Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presented the letters of credence to both ambassadors during a ceremony held at the President's Office on Thursday.

Adam Shareef and Thoriq resigned from the Cabinet as part of a government restructuring carried out following the local council elections held in April.

The restructuring saw President Muizzu request the resignation of several cabinet ministers.

Following their departure from the Cabinet, both men were appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassadors-at-Large with the rank of minister.

Last month, President Muizzu submitted their nominations to the People's Majlis for parliamentary approval before making the appointments.

Adam Shareef will represent the Maldives in Qatar, while Thoriq Ibrahim will serve as the Maldives' ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
