The Malé City Council has approved a proposal to provide free venue spaces for couples to hold their first wedding reception, or Waleema, in the capital.
The decision was approved during the council's general meeting on Wednesday.
Presenting the proposal, Mayor Adam Azim said the initiative was one of the commitments made by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) councillors for the current council term.
Under the decision, the council will introduce a regulation governing the scheme and begin arrangements to implement it.
The council approved the following measures:

Provide free venue spaces in Malé for couples holding their first wedding reception under a dedicated regulation.

Assign the Finance and Budget Committee and the Social, Gender and Affairs Committee to draft the regulation.

Complete the draft regulation before the next council meeting.
The proposal was approved by a majority vote of the council.
