President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu will improve traffic flow across Malé once the project is completed.
Work on the northern section of the ring road began in August last year. The project, valued at about MVR 144 million, is scheduled for completion before the end of this year.
Speaking on the President's Office weekly podcast Pulse on Friday, Muizzu said the completed ring road would improve traffic movement throughout the capital.
He said the road is being developed with two-way traffic lanes around the island, which would reduce congestion on inner roads.
"This ease of traffic will be felt across the entire city of Malé," the President said.
Muizzu said the section between Izzudheen Jetty and the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area has been completed and will be opened to the public next week.
He said motorcycles currently parked along the stretch between Nasandhura Hotel and Izzudheen Jetty would be relocated to a reclaimed parking area with capacity for up to 500 motorcycles, allowing traffic to move more freely along the road.
The President said work on Malé's inner roads would begin after the completion of Boduthakurufaanu Magu.
According to Muizzu, funding for the project has been secured from the Chinese government and preparations for construction are underway. He said work is expected to begin by the end of this year or early next year.
He said the project would include asphalt surfacing on some roads and cobblestone paving on others.
Muizzu said the road development programme would also address flooding, drainage and parking issues while improving access through narrow streets.
"This project is about to begin. Upon its completion, God willing, it will bring comfort and peace of mind to everyone living in Malé," he said.
