Five people have been moved to temporary accommodation after a fire damaged an apartment at the Hiya housing towers in Hulhumalé on Sunday.

The fire broke out in an apartment on the 19th floor of Hiya Tower 8 and was reported to police at 1:27 pm.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) responded to the scene and brought the fire under control shortly after arriving.

According to police, the fire started in the kitchen, which sustained damage.

Police said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the apartment was temporarily uninhabitable because of smoke damage.

The authority has arranged temporary accommodation and meals for the affected residents while clean-up work is carried out.

The five residents, all Maldivian nationals, have been provided with temporary accommodation for three days, according to the NDMA.
