President removes Savaahili from Addu council jurisdiction
On Sunday, the council invited proposals for the project on Savaahili, which is located near Feydhoo and Maradhoofeydhoo.
President Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree removing the island of Savaahili from the administrative jurisdiction of the Addu City Council and designating it for tourism development.
The decree was issued late on Wednesday, days after the Addu City Council opened bidding for the development and management of an entertainment and recreation facility on the island.
On Sunday, the council invited proposals for the project on Savaahili, which is located near Feydhoo and Maradhoofeydhoo.
The President's decree amends the administrative boundaries of Addu City to exclude the island.
While the decree does not set out a development plan, the President's Office said Savaahili had been removed from the council's jurisdiction for tourism development.
Under the revised zoning map, the island has been designated as a resort island and placed under the administration of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
The Addu City Council first resolved to allocate Savaahili for tourism development on 18 February 2021.
Following delays, the council decided on 14 February 2024 to proceed with offering commercial tourism opportunities on the island.
In April 2025, the council issued a public invitation seeking proposals to construct, operate and manage a tourism facility on Savaahili.
