The GA. Gemanafushi Magistrate Court has issued a public notice seeking information on the whereabouts of a man who went missing at sea 53 years ago after a vessel travelling from GA. Dhiyadhoo to Malé capsized.

The notice, issued last Thursday, concerns Hassan Mohamed of Thandhirathmaage, GA. Dhiyadhoo.

The court has requested anyone with information on whether Hassan Mohamed is alive or deceased to come forward within 10 days.

The public notice is understood to have been issued to establish his legal status as part of inheritance proceedings.

According to available information, Hassan Mohamed was among those aboard a vessel that left Dhiyadhoo for Malé in 1973 before it was caught in a storm and capsized.

No survivors or wreckage from the vessel have been recovered.

Dhiyadhoo, which was inhabited at the time of the incident, was officially depopulated in 2009 during the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Most residents relocated to nearby islands in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, including Gemanafushi, Kondey and Kolamaafushi.

Although Dhiyadhoo once had a larger population, only around 20 residents remained on the island when it was officially depopulated.
