LGA board election postponed indefinitely

The election to appoint elected representatives to the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board has been postponed indefinitely.

The election is held to select board members from among local councillors and presidents of Women's Development Committees (WDCs).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the LGA said the election had been postponed because the necessary preparatory work had not been completed. The authority did not provide further details or announce a new date for the vote.

The election had previously been scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Under the election process, one representative from city councils, one representative from island councils and one president of a Women's Development Committee are elected to the nine-member LGA Board.

Following the announcement, former President Mohamed Nasheed criticised the decision to postpone the election.

In a post on X, Nasheed said postponing the election indefinitely amounted to the "government declaring its own defeat."

"The LGA election must be held on schedule," he wrote.
