MP seeks answers over conditions at Himmafushi drug rehabilitation centre

Galolhu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ibrahim has sought information from the government on conditions at the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in K. Himmafushi, citing concerns over treatment, infrastructure and services at the facility.
Mohamed Ibrahim, a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), sent a letter to Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan on Saturday requesting information on the operation of the centre.
In the letter, which was also published on the MP's website, Mohamed Ibrahim said concerns had been raised by patients, their families and relevant authorities over conditions at the facility.
He said issues at the centre had raised questions about the safety and dignity of patients, as well as the rehabilitation process for people seeking to reintegrate into society.
"Under the Drug Act and international human rights standards, every individual seeking treatment has the right to safe, dignified, and evidence-based care," Mohamed Ibrahim said in the letter.
He said failure to provide these standards could affect treatment outcomes and increase the risk of relapse.
"As this information directly involves public interest, I request a response at the earliest opportunity," he added.
Mohamed Ibrahim requested information from the ministry across eight areas relating to the centre's infrastructure, staffing, treatment programmes and living conditions.
The MP sought clarification on reports that parts of the centre's infrastructure have deteriorated and that conditions at the facility do not meet hygiene requirements for accommodating patients.
He also requested details on treatment programmes currently provided at the centre, including whether it has enough counselling and medical personnel. Information was also sought on the training and qualifications of staff involved in treatment.
The letter requested information on the quality of food provided to patients and measures being taken to improve toilet and sleeping facilities.
Mohamed Ibrahim also asked whether repair or redevelopment work is being undertaken at the centre.
The MP further sought confirmation on whether treatment methods used at the facility comply with international standards and principles.
The Himmafushi Drug Rehabilitation Centre provides treatment and rehabilitation services for people seeking recovery from drug dependence.
