Ex-deputy minister Raaghib among 3 selected as Civil Court judges

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint three judges to the Civil Court, including former Environment Ministry Deputy Minister Mohamed Raaghib Ahmed, according to information obtained by Dhauru.
The JSC opened applications on 21 June to fill three vacancies on the Civil Court bench. A total of 42 people applied by the deadline on 1 July.
According to information obtained by Dhauru, the commission finalised the three candidates for appointment last Saturday.
Those selected are Mohamed Raaghib Ahmed, Dhaftharu No. RS 13410; Aasiya Azeema of Rosevilla, R. Hulhudhuffaaru; and Mohamed Nishath of Reel Manzil, GA. Kanduhulhudhoo.
Raaghib previously served as a Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Environment under the current administration.
He was dismissed from the post on 25 November 2024 after filing a lawsuit against the state over the decision to grant city status to GDh. Thinadhoo. In the case, Raaghib alleged that the status had been granted through misrepresentation.
Nishath currently serves as Chief Magistrate of the Kanduhulhudhoo Magistrate Court. He was appointed to the position last year.
Before his appointment to the judiciary, Nishath contested a People's National Congress (PNC) primary ahead of the 2024 parliamentary election.
The latest selections come as the JSC has also decided to appoint three judges to the Criminal Court.
The commission has selected Ahmed Thaufeeq, Sulaiman Mohamed and Mohamed Abdulla to fill the three vacancies on the Criminal Court bench.
The JSC has yet to issue public announcements confirming either set of appointments, although the commission has previously published announcements on judicial appointments.
