Court remands MDP activist Maimoon for 5 days

The Criminal Court on Tuesday remanded Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed in custody for five days following his arrest after a party protest in Malé on Monday night.
Maimoon, Vice President of the MDP Youth Wing and a participant in the party’s demonstrations, was arrested by police under a court warrant.
Police told media outlets on Tuesday that his arrest was related to incidents during an MDP protest held last Friday.
According to police, Maimoon is accused of causing unrest, obstructing officers from carrying out their duties and breaching police barricades used to close roads during the demonstration.
The MDP’s legal team confirmed to Dhauru that the Criminal Court on Tuesday ordered Maimoon to be held in custody for five days.
Maimoon also participated in the MDP protest held in Malé on Monday night. According to the party, police took him into custody from the street shortly after the demonstration ended.
Following the arrest, MDP leaders and members called for his release.
Maimoon has previously been arrested in connection with street demonstrations.
