Report on the conclusion of the trial where former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was found guilty on the charges of money laundering and bribery and sentenced to serve 11 years in prison has been passed to the former president's lawyers.
The verdict in Yameen's case was delivered Sunday afternoon, however the report on the completion of the trial was not handed over to his legal team.
Thus Yameen's legal team had been present in the Criminal Court since Monday morning trying for the release of the said report. And after several re-iterations on a time when the report would be released, the document was finally handed over to the team around 2.30pm.
Yameen's legal team and his supporters have expressed concern over the delay in receiving this report which is mandatory to be released on the same day as a verdict hearing.
The legal team for the former president has refused to accept the verdict and sentencing passed by the Criminal Court yesterday, stating that it violated the constitution and the criminal code procedure and adding that a swift appeal process would be launched.
