Criminal Court case disposal more than doubles after move to new building
That figure has since increased to 175 cases per month, representing an increase of about 140 per cent.
The number of cases concluded by the Criminal Court each month has increased by about 140 per cent since the court moved to its new building in Hulhumalé, according to statistics released by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The Criminal Court moved from its previous premises to the new building in Hulhumalé in June 2024.
Statistics show that the relocation eased space constraints at the court and was followed by an increase in the number of cases being scheduled and concluded.
Before the move, the Criminal Court concluded an average of 72 cases per month. That figure has since increased to 175 cases per month, representing an increase of about 140 per cent.
A total of 1,062 cases were filed at the Criminal Court in 2025. During the year, the court concluded 1,380 cases, including cases carried forward from previous years.
Public Prosecutor and Prosecutor General’s Office spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu said the figures showed that the number of cases being scheduled at the Criminal Court had increased to nearly twice the level recorded before the new building came into use.
“Compared with the period before the Criminal Court’s new building came into use in June 2024, statistics show that the number of cases being scheduled at the court has now increased by almost twofold,” Shafeeu said.
The Prosecutor General’s Office also released figures on its work during the past month.
According to the statistics, the office received 222 cases and handled 729 matters through duty prosecution. Prosecutors filed 330 cases in court and attended 1,205 hearings during the month.
