Police arrest 3 in Gan airport drug smuggling case

Three people have been arrested in connection with an attempt to smuggle more than three kilogrammes of drugs into the Maldives through Gan International Airport, police said.
The arrests relate to a case in which drugs were brought into the country through Gan International Airport in Addu City on Tuesday.
Police identified those arrested as two Indian nationals and a Maldivian. They are:

Vivek Amban, 24, an Indian national;

Shahmil Pali Parambath, 32, an Indian national; and

Abdulla Ibrahim, 36, of Kumeree, Hoadhadu, Fuvahmulah.
According to police, the two Indian nationals were arrested after Maldives Customs Service received intelligence that drugs had been concealed in their luggage when they arrived in the country.
Customs officers searched their luggage following the information and discovered the suspected drugs.
The Maldivian suspect was later arrested during a controlled delivery operation conducted jointly by the South Police Serious Crime Investigation unit, Counter Narcotics Operations and police intelligence.
Police said more than three kilogrammes of drugs were involved in the case.
