Court orders mental health support for foreigner rescued after jumping from Sinamalé Bridge
The 31-year-old man was rescued by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) after he jumped from the bridge into the sea late on Wednesday night.
The Criminal Court has ordered authorities to arrange mental health support for a foreign man who was detained after being rescued from the sea following an incident at the Sinamalé Bridge.
The 31-year-old man was rescued by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) after he jumped from the bridge into the sea late on Wednesday night.
The MNDF handed the man over to police, who initially took him to hospital. While he remained admitted, police arrested him on suspicion of attempting to harm himself.
The Criminal Court initially remanded him for five days while he was receiving treatment at the hospital. The court also ordered police to bring him before the court within 24 hours of his condition improving.
When the man was presented to the court on Thursday, the court ordered his unconditional release.
The Criminal Court said there were no grounds to keep the man in custody and instructed the relevant authorities to provide him with mental health assistance.
The court also said its decision did not prevent police from completing the necessary procedures to hand the foreign national over to Maldives Immigration for his departure from the country.
