Man accused of repeatedly damaging mosques remanded pending trial
Naushad has previously been arrested on several occasions in connection with incidents at mosques.
The Criminal Court has ordered a 32-year-old man with a history of arrests over incidents at mosques to be remanded until the conclusion of his trial.
The court issued the order on Friday for Naushad Moosa, stating that his arrest and remand records showed repeated allegations of offences involving damage to mosques.
Naushad was most recently arrested on 10 September. Police said at the time that he was arrested for causing a disturbance at a mosque.
The court initially remanded him for 15 days. He was brought before the court again on Friday after the initial remand period expired, with the court subsequently ordering his detention for the duration of the trial.
Naushad has previously been arrested on several occasions in connection with incidents at mosques.
In one case, he was arrested after allegedly removing partitions at Furugaan Mosque, damaging switches and destroying electrical boards.
He has also previously been arrested on suspicion of making sexual gestures towards women inside a mosque.
Media reports have previously covered several of his arrests. Following an earlier incident in which Furugaan Mosque was damaged, some religious scholars who provided information to the media said Naushad was also known to regularly sleep at the mosque.
