The Criminal Court has ordered the detention of Ahmed Farish, who is accused of causing disturbances in the Kashimaa Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu area of Malé, for 15 days following his arrest on Saturday.

Farish, 43, from HA. Hoarafushi, was arrested after complaints from residents and road users who alleged that he had been causing disturbances in the neighbourhood for more than one and a half years.

The arrest followed a hunger strike by Mohamed Saeed, who began protesting on Saturday after repeated complaints to the relevant authorities failed to produce a lasting solution.

Saeed continued his hunger strike for 35 hours, ending the protest on Sunday afternoon after receiving assurances that the authorities would take action.

Police arrested Farish on Saturday, and the Criminal Court ordered his detention for 15 days on Sunday.

According to the court's remand order, Farish is suspected of making threats, damaging property, committing acts of violence and obstructing police officers in the performance of their duties.

The court also noted concerns that releasing him from custody could pose a risk to public safety.

The remand order stated that Farish denied the allegations against him.

Residents of the Kashimaa Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu area have complained for years about disturbances allegedly caused by Farish, including harassment of pedestrians and motorists.

Despite Farish's arrest on Saturday, Saeed continued his hunger strike, saying that he wanted assurances that the matter would be addressed rather than relying solely on the arrest.

Saeed announced on Sunday that he had ended the protest after receiving assurances of support from the relevant authorities.

He said Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan had personally contacted him and provided assurances regarding the case.

Saeed has said he will continue to monitor whether the authorities implement the measures they have promised.

The allegations against Farish remain under investigation, and he has not been convicted of the suspected offences.
