A man arrested for repeatedly causing disturbances in public while allegedly under the influence of drugs in Malé has escaped from a rehabilitation centre operated by the National Drug Agency (NDA) in Himmafushi.

Police confirmed on Saturday that Ahmed Fairish, 43, escaped from the facility while under the NDA's supervision.

Fairish was arrested on 17 October following complaints that he had repeatedly caused disturbances in the area around Kashima Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu in Malé.

His arrest followed a protest by Mohamed Saeed, who raised concerns over the authorities' failure to take action despite repeated incidents involving Fairish.

Following his arrest, Fairish was brought before the court, which ordered him to be remanded in custody for 15 days.

He was subsequently transferred to the NDA's rehabilitation centre in Himmafushi for treatment.

In a statement on Saturday, police said they had received information that Fairish had escaped from the centre during the afternoon.

"Police received information that [Fairish] escaped this afternoon while under the supervision of the NDA at the facility," police said.

Police did not provide further details about the circumstances of his escape.
