The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecast rain across much of the country until Wednesday as the southwest monsoon intensifies.

According to the Met Office, widespread showers are expected during the period, with some islands likely to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The agency also warned that heavy rainfall could cause flooding in some islands.

The Met Office has advised the public to monitor the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Rainfall statistics released by the agency show that GDh. Faresmaathodaa recorded the highest rainfall in the 24 hours between 8am on Friday and 8am on Saturday, receiving 104.6 millimetres.

N. Maafaru recorded 78.6 millimetres of rainfall during the same period, while AA. Thoddoo received 65.6 millimetres.

Heavy rain has already caused flooding in several southern islands, prompting response efforts by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and relevant authorities.

The MNDF and other agencies are continuing to provide assistance to affected communities as the country experiences further rainfall.
