Strong winds, rain cause damage in Malé, Hulhumalé

Heavy rain and strong winds on Friday morning caused damage in various parts of Malé and Hulhumalé, including the uprooting of trees and damage to structures and vehicles.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, rain and winds reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour were expected in northern and central regions of the country.
Police said trees were uprooted in several locations, including Fithuroanu Magu and Bageecha Magu in Hulhumalé. Some of the fallen trees caused damage to parked vehicles.
Reports also indicated instances of roof collapses caused by the strong winds. Details of these incidents have not yet been released.
A video circulating on social media shows a bus stop shelter in the Phase 2 Hiyaa flats area being blown away. Several bicycles parked nearby were also knocked over by the wind.
Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions, with the Meteorological Service forecasting continued heavy rain and thunderstorms in many parts of the country throughout the day.
