A team of foreign experts is assisting in the massive investigation launched by the police to find out the truth behind the ongoing fire incidents in Male and other islands.

Police commissioner Mohamed Hameed took to Twitter Monday morning to announce that a massive investigation has been launched to find out the exact nature of the fire. Without divulging further details, the commissioner sought public help in the investigation.

When asked about the incident, a police spokesman said Monday evening that a team of forensic experts from abroad was assisting in the investigation.

However, the police did not say whether the team was assisting by arriving or staying abroad.

There have been four fire incidents in the recent past.

  • The first fire broke out on December 31 in a garbage dump at Addu Hulhudhoo harbour and later the same night another fire in the forest; the island council alleged that a group of people set it on fire

  • Later on Saturday, a fire had broken out amidst fibre-works in the R. Alifushi garbage area; the fire was brought under control after it spread wide

  • On Sunday evening, part of GDh. Fiyoaree School caught fire, burnt beyond use

  • The fire that broke out at the second hand market area in Male was brought under control after about three hours; two blocks of accommodation for migrant workers were gutted
