Tree Top Hospital has successfully completed the removal of a very large fibroid the size of 12x10x10 cm through laparoscopic myomectomy, making it the first time in the Maldives that a fibroid of this size was removed through a laparoscopy.

A Laparoscopic myomectomy is the removal of uterine fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. It is a minimally invasive procedure. The surgery requires precision and accuracy in order to not disturb the uterus and to avoid heavy bleeding.

The surgery was carried out by Dr Mahmoud Aboubakur, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology, assisted by Dr Rishi Kant, Consultant General Surgery as the first assistant and Dr Preethy Solomon, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology as a second assistant, along with a skilled team of OT nurses and with support from Dr Aminath Fiuna, Consultant of Anaesthesia who provided anaesthesia to the patient.

"The laparoscopic myomectomy was performed to remove the large fibroid through only four minuscule holes each 5-10mm repair of the uterus in two-layer was completed without any complication and I am happy to share that the patient’s recovery is progressing well," Dr Aboubakur said.

Emilie Elegante is a 39-year-old had severe anaemia and heavy vaginal bleeding. During clinical evaluation she was diagnosed with a large uterine fibroid. A fibroid is a non-cancerous growth that develops in or around the womb. Depending on the type, size and location of the uterine fibroids, different symptoms might be faced and to remove this fibroid a surgery is required.

"I thank Dr Mahmoud and the team for getting me through this delicate surgery, I am recovering well all thanks to the care provided from the first day up until discharge," Elegante said. 

Dr Aboubakr has over 12 years of experience in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in infertility management IUI & IVF Hysteroscopy & advanced Laparoscopic procedures. He completed his MBBS from Mansoura University, Egypt and his Master’s Degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology & Reproductive medicine & infertility at Mansoura University Egypt.

Dr Aboubakr completed the professional diploma of IVF and infertility (AACME) USA DIRMAS Birmingham diploma of infertility and IVF EDGES diploma of Advanced laparoscopic surgeries (German and  Egyptian society).

Through evaluation, diagnosis, and management of infertility, including ovulation induction, he assisted several couples to conceive after experiencing infertility for a long period of time

As a general obstetrician and gynaecologist, he has performed many difficult caesarian sections and hysterectomies and supervised deliveries in Egypt and Maldives. He also attended multiple trainings over the years including courses in resuscitation, mechanical ventilation and immunotherapy.
