Maldives donates million tuna cans to quake hit Turkey, Syria
The President's Office said 500,000 cans of tuna will be donated to each country to assist in the efforts to provide humanitarian and relief aid.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Friday that the government of the Maldives would donate Turkey and Syria with in-kind assistance of one million cans of tuna.
In a statement, the President's Office said 500,000 cans of tuna will be donated to each country to assist in the efforts to provide humanitarian and relief aid to those displaced by the devastating earthquakes that struck the region on Monday.
More than 22,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, officials said.
Rescue workers are racing against time to pull survivors from the rubble.
Some heart-warming successes were seen in Turkey, but an aid group said hope is fading in northwest Syria. Executive director of the World Food Programme called the situation in northwest Syria a "catastrophe on top of catastrophe."
Survivors, many of whom are homeless, could face "a secondary disaster" as cold and snow lead to "worsening and horrific conditions," the World Health Organisation said.
